Wind, weather & tides
Dakhla is a real wind sensation and provides us with fantastic wind all year round! The trade winds that migrate between the Canary Islands and Cape Verde in summer and winter hit Dakhla all year round, so the wind blows constantly here on 320 days with approx. 15-22 knots. Coming from the northeast, the wind blows sideshore from the right and is further intensified by the mountains in the hinterland, as the wind is forced through them like a funnel.
The climate is pleasant, with a soothing Atlantic influence, rather dry and not too hot.
The lagoon, which is around 40 km long and 4 km wide, was formed by the Dakhla Peninsula and is connected to the Atlantic Ocean. This means that the water in the lagoon is also affected by the tides:
At high tide, you have a standing area up to 300 m wide around the lagoon.
At low tide, this strip shrinks slightly, but can still be used thanks to 1 km of windward freedom. The ground is covered in fine sand. We still recommend neoprene shoes, as there are shell fragments hidden in the sand in some places. At low tide, this area is partially dry and you only have to walk a few meters further to the water's edge.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitesurfing and Wingfoiling at the Dakhla Lagoon
Where is the Dakhla Lagoon located?
The Dakhla Lagoon is located on the Atlantic coast of the Western Sahara region, which is administered by Morocco, about 1,500 km south of Casablanca. The Dakhla Peninsula shields a shallow lagoon basin, approximately 45 km long, from the open Atlantic—surrounded by desert and sand dunes. It is precisely this sheltered location that makes the lagoon one of the best flat water spots in the world.
How big is the Dakhla lagoon?
The lagoon stretches for about 45 kilometers. This provides an enormous amount of space on the water, long standing areas, and several different spots—overcrowding is practically never an issue here, even in high season.
Is Dakhla safe for travel and kitesurfing?
Yes. Dakhla is considered a peaceful, stable, and very safe destination for water sports tourists. The KBC Kite and Wingfoil Station is located right on the lagoon; the shallow, expansive shallow water is safe even for beginners, and safety boats monitor the spots. Dakhla Airport has seen a sharp rise in tourist numbers for years.
When is the best time to go kitesurfing in Dakhla?
Dakhla is a year-round destination with wind on most days of the year. The period with the highest wind strength is April through September—ideal for serious kiting and wingfoiling. For waves, September through May are best, with October considered the best month because that’s when wind and waves align. Fall (September/October) is the most balanced time overall: warm, less crowded, and more affordable than summer.
Dakhla is also absolutely wind-reliable in winter and highly recommended.
How many windy days does Dakhla have per year?
Dakhla offers over 300 windy days per year. The prevailing northeast trade winds are further accelerated by the Venturi effect between the dunes, which explains the high wind yield.
How strong is the wind in Dakhla?
During the peak months of April through September, the wind blows strongly on a regular basis and reaches peaks of around 35 knots. In winter (December/January), the wind is weaker and more thermal, but there are still plenty of days suitable for kitesurfing. Typical kite sizes range from about 7 to 12 m², depending on the season and rider weight.
At what time of day is the wind strongest?
The wind is usually lighter in the morning and picks up significantly in the afternoon due to the thermal effect—often starting around 2 p.m. Mornings are therefore well-suited for lessons and relaxed practice, while afternoons are better for more intense sessions.
How warm is it in Dakhla, and what is the climate like?
Dakhla has a mild desert coastal climate with sunshine almost all year round. The air temperature is usually between 20 and 28 °C, around 20–22 °C during the day in winter and around 26–28 °C in summer, but never oppressively hot thanks to the constant wind. It cools down noticeably in the evenings—be sure to pack a warm sweater.
How warm is the water, and what kind of wetsuit do I need?
The lagoon is fed by the Atlantic Ocean and is cooler than the air. From November to April, the water temperature is around 17–19 °C—a 3/2 mm wetsuit is recommended here. From May to October, the water warms up to around 22–24 °C, at which point a shorty or a 3/4-length wetsuit is sufficient for many. A neoprene top is also a good idea in summer.
Is the Dakhla lagoon suitable for beginners?
Yes, the lagoon is one of the best beginner spots around. It offers expansive, shallow standing water with a sandy, smooth bottom, plenty of space, and reliable wind. At low tide, you can stand for long stretches—ideal for body drag, water start, and those first few meters of riding. Conditions change with the tides, which is why a guided orientation is recommended.
What kite spots are there around the Dakhla lagoon?
The main spots are: the main lagoon (flat, spacious, suitable for all levels and beginners), the Speed Spot on the east side (very flat and ideal for freestyle), the White Dune with extremely smooth water behind a white dune (often accessed as a downwind ride), and the wave spot Oum Lbouir on the open Atlantic, about 30 minutes away. Depending on the tide, spots like Oyster Farm or Secret Spot can also be interesting.
KBC Dakhla offers guided tours to all spots.
Are there also waves for kiting in Dakhla?
Yes. On the Atlantic side, there are wave spots, most notably Oum Lbouir with a right-hand point break and long, clean-running waves. The best time for waves is September through May, with October being the top month because that’s when the wind and swell come together. The wind on the ocean side tends to be a bit lighter than in the lagoon. KBC Dakhla offers guided tours to the wave spot.
Do tides and water levels play a role?
Yes, very much so. At low tide, the lagoon is flat and very shallow in places along the edges, with large standing areas. As the tide rises, the water gets deeper and choppier in strong winds. Which spot works best and when depends on the tide and wind direction—that’s why we decide where to go based on the conditions on-site.
Is Dakhla also suitable for wingfoiling?
Yes, it’s excellent. The smooth water, consistent wind, and expansive space make the lagoon an ideal spot for wingfoiling—both for beginners and for practicing maneuvers in a safe environment.
How do I get to Dakhla?
Fly to Dakhla Airport (IATA code: VIL). Royal Air Maroc operates multiple daily flights from Moroccan hubs such as Casablanca, Agadir, Marrakesh, Rabat, and Laayoune. From Europe, there are seasonal or year-round direct flights, such as with Transavia and Royal Air Maroc from Paris-Orly, with Ryanair from Madrid, and with Binter Canarias from Gran Canaria.
Are there direct flights to Dakhla from Europe?
Yes, but they are limited and seasonal. As of 2026, airlines including Transavia (e.g., Paris-Orly, seasonally Bordeaux and Marseille), Royal Air Maroc (seasonally Paris-Orly), Ryanair (year-round from Madrid), and Binter Canarias (seasonal from Gran Canaria). From German-speaking countries, the route usually involves a layover in Casablanca, Madrid, or Paris.
How far is the airport from the lagoon?
Dakhla Airport (VIL) is located near the city; it’s only about 10–20 minutes to the center. The drive from the airport to the KBC Dakhla or the Dakhla Club Hotel takes about 40 minutes. If you’re staying at the Dakhla Club Hotel, the transfer is included.
Do I need a visa for Dakhla?
Travel to Dakhla is via Morocco, so Moroccan entry rules apply. For many nationalities—including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and most EU countries—no visa is required for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid beyond the end of your trip. Check the current regulations with the relevant authorities before traveling, as rules may change.
Do I need a rental car once I’m there?
A rental car is not strictly necessary—the camps on the lagoon are self-sufficient and organize transfers to the spots. However, if you want to be independent and explore the region, a rental car offers more flexibility. Many camps can arrange a reliable local car rental service, including airport pickup, upon request.
Can I rent kite equipment on-site, or do I need to bring my own?
Both options are available. The KBC Dakhla at the lagoon offers equipment rental with up-to-date gear in various sizes, as well as storage for your own equipment. If you’re bringing your own gear: Royal Air Maroc often offers discounted rates for sports luggage or includes it up to a certain weight—check the exact conditions with the airline before your flight.
What currency is used in Dakhla, and can I pay by card?
The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). At camps and locally, cash payments are often expected, sometimes in euros or US dollars; card payments aren’t accepted everywhere. So be sure to bring enough cash. There are ATMs in the city of Dakhla.
What languages are spoken in Dakhla?
The official languages are Arabic and Tamazight, and French is also widely spoken. English is additionally spoken at the internationally oriented kite camps.
What else is there to do in Dakhla besides kitesurfing?
Dakhla is primarily a water sports and nature destination. Popular excursions include trips to the White Dune, hot springs, oyster farms, Dragon Island, as well as desert and dune tours. There is hardly any traditional nightlife—the appeal lies in the wind, water, vastness, and tranquility of the Western Sahara.
Is there Wi-Fi and cell phone reception at the lagoon?
There is Wi-Fi and cell phone reception in the city and at most camps, but the signal may be weaker at more remote spots. For stable mobile internet, we recommend a local SIM card or an eSIM from a Moroccan provider.
What should I pack for a kitesurfing trip to Dakhla?
We recommend: a suitable wetsuit (3/2 mm in winter, shorty in summer), high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect against wind and sand, warm clothing for the evenings, enough cash, and your own kite equipment if needed. A passport with sufficient validity is required.
