Centre Profile

Kite beach & spot

The kitesurf school is situated on the kite beach in the eastern part of the island. In our bay, the wind is stable and blows cross-onshore. Your path across the fine sand takes you to the flat water-start area and a small wave that travels to the shore at large intervals. Here – under perfect conditions for beginners – is where we’ll train you. Somewhat further out to sea is where a real wave awaits you, one that breaks cleanly and is easy to ride. For experienced kitesurfers, our assisted kitesurfing service offers storage, use of the station and someone to keep an eye on you.

The Kite Centre

The kite centre on the kite beach is new and was built in 2016. From here it’s a mere 100 m to the water’s edge. The kite centre is cosily furnished and ideal for relaxing after a marvellous day of kiting:

  • Storage boxes for your personal kite gear
  • Toilets
  • Sun terraces
  • Bar (cold drinks, but yet no food)

If you’re travelling with a non-kiter, they are of course very welcome at the kitesurf centre and can use all facilities free of charge.

  • Repair of burst front tubes, struts or large cracks in the cloth
Get in touch with us on-site.

Meals

We recommend either accommodation including breakfast or a holiday apartment with self-catering. Santa Maria also has a number of excellent cafés, bistros and restaurants:

  • Cape Fruit: A paradise for fruit and veg juice fans (over 30 kinds) plus a lavish breakfast, salads and wraps – all homemade and freshly prepared.
  • Papaya: Don’t miss the all-you-can-eat breakfast, right at the water’s edge with an incomparable view of the Santa Maria bay.
  • Giramondo: Quick breakfasts, good coffee and a popular place to stop by in the evening for freshly made ice cream, cocktails, great music and a chill atmosphere in the centre of Santa Maria.
  • Fishermans: German cuisine featuring local, freshly caught fish.

...And that’s only a small selection of recommended places to eat. We’ll be happy to give you more suggestions – just stop by!

Sal's hotels

  • Rides on friendly horses

We’ll be happy to advise you on-site.

Or you can send us an email in advance.

Parties & events

In Santa Maria, there’s something on every evening – and with over 60 clubs, bars and restaurants to choose from, there’s something for everyone. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the high street is closed off to traffic– and the bars and clubs take over. We recommend:

Brasilian: the best caipirinha in town. Unpretentious plastic chairs and tables right on the beach and amazing caipirinhas. Open from 4pm until evening (not all night ). Perfect for a sundowner!

Giramondo: very popular in the evenings, featuring freshly made ice cream, cocktails, great music and a chill atmosphere in the centre of town.

Fishermans: German restaurant with local, freshly caught fish and live football on TV.

Pub Calema: the hottest place to be, with a happy hour nearly every day from 8-10pm.

...And for more tips, just ask!

Wind & Weather

Current measurement data

The wind forecast for Sal by Windyapp.co.

The wind comes from the north-east and blows cross-onshore over the KBC kite beach. The trade winds are very reliable, with only a brief lull in mid-summer. From early November to late April, the trade winds ensure truly impressive, outstanding wind statistics. We recommend a shorty, as well as always wearing high-quality, waterproof sunscreen.

Accomodation on Sal

Accommodation on Sal Sal offers the right accommodation for every holidaymaker. Whether you’re looking for a large hotel, a B&B, a holiday apartment or a hostel, Sal has it all – from simply furnished to the height of luxury. Here are a few recommendations:

Aparthotel Ponta Preta Our guests love it here: the complex is near the beach (100 m) and features small, well-appointed holiday apartments with a kitchen unit and balcony. For small groups, we recommend Ponta Preta, which is clean and inexpensive.

Apartments Porto Antigo Lovely, nicely furnished apartments directly on the beach of Santa Maria, with a view of the old fishing docks. Each apartment has its own patio with pool and garden access.

Dunas de Sal A tranquil hotel resort with a charming garden and and only 8 minutes’ walking distance from the white sandy beach. The friendly, high-ceilinged rooms have Wi-Fi (for a surcharge), TV, minibar and safe. In the upper price range, suites and rooms with a balcony also include a tea and coffee maker. The suites also have a whirlpool bath and sofa. The breakfast buffet (included) is served in the elegant restaurant. In addition, there is an open-air bar with live music at the outer pool. The hotel complex features a diving centre, a gym, and yoga classes as well as massage and laundry services.

Morabeza Hotel Morabeza is without question one of Sal’s most exclusive hotel complexes. It is situated directly on the fabulous, miles-long sand beach of Santa Maria. And it’s only around a 10-minute walk from the hotel to the centre of town and the many shops, restaurants and bars.

Other Accomodation

There are other hotels and B&Bs on Sal as well, including the following three, which are somewhat lower in price:

Santa Maria Beach
Clean and inexpensive, Santa Maria Beach is only 100 m from the bathing beach. Breakfast is included.

Pousada da Luz
An unpretentious, clean and attractively priced inn, with breakfast included.

Surf House Cabo Verde
These moderately priced, modern apartments are situated around 300 m from the bathing beach.
