Wind, Weather & Tide
High and low tide in our lagoon
The water difference in our shallow lagoon is dependable on the tides, between 20-70cm. Generally, the water level is a little higher in winter so you can safely kite in the lagoon. In summer however, and especially around full moon, the lagoon can be completely drained for several hours. During that time, you can only kitesurf behind our reef. But don´t you worry, our rescue boat is always available in case you need help.
Wind in El Gouna
The wind at KBC El Gouna usually blows diagonally onshore from the left ("side-onshore") from a north-northwesterly direction, blowing directly, without turbulence, constantly, and without gusts from the Red Sea. There is usually significantly more wind than is predicted in most weather reports. We’ve had the best results with Windguru’s wind forecast. The “modified wind” or the displayed gusts predict the actual wind most accurately.
Temperatures in El Gouna
In spring and fall, we recommend a shorty; in summer, you can participate in kitesurfing wearing just board shorts and a wetsuit top. However, you should always remember to use very good, water-resistant sunscreen.
During the winter months (December through February), there are more days with strong and light winds—the wind isn’t quite as consistent as in the other months. We recommend long neoprene suits in the winter. Air temperatures are still mild during the day, but it gets chilly as soon as the sun goes down. So pack warm, long-sleeved clothing and a hat for when you get out of the water.
How does the wind form in El Gouna?
The wind in the Hurghada and El Gouna region—especially on the Red Sea—is generated by a combination of natural large-scale air currents and local effects:
1. Large-scale trade winds
Our region lies within the influence of the northeastern trade winds, a constant wind system circling the equator. Over the Red Sea, these trade winds regularly blow from the northwest to north-northwest. This direction is particularly dominant further north (i.e., near Hurghada and El Gouna) and ensures reliable side-shore winds.
2. Thermal winds
During the day, the land heats up much more than the sea. This temperature difference creates a low-pressure system over land that draws in cooler sea air—a classic thermal effect. Combined with the trade winds, this strengthens the wind, especially in the afternoon hours.
3. Venturi Effect Due to Topography
The landscape in El Gouna and the surrounding area—characterized by mountains, islands, and coastal formations—acts like a natural nozzle: the air is channeled and accelerated as it passes between these obstacles. This creates a locally strengthened wind.

I completed my first kiteboarding event at KBC El Gouna. Everything was superbly organized. The kite instructors and all the other staff at KBC were very dedicated and friendly. I'll definitely be back! 😀
Full service. Great spot for beginners.
I spent 10 days at the KBC station and felt incredibly well taken care of. The support was fantastic, whether at reception, with the kite instructors, the beach attendants, or in the restaurant – top-notch service everywhere. I'll definitely be back. Best regards Reto number One ;-)
I spent just one day at KBC for a two-hour kite rental, costing €55. The €55 doesn't include insurance, so if you want to do it yourself or break something, you'll obviously have to pay! The previous days, I've stayed at other establishments that charge more and don't offer additional services. KBC...
