Kite beach & spot
The kitesurf school is situated on the kite beach in the eastern part of the island. In our bay, the wind is stable and blows cross-onshore. Your path across the fine sand takes you to the flat water-start area and a small wave that travels to the shore at large intervals. Here – under perfect conditions for beginners – is where we’ll train you. Somewhat further out to sea is where a real wave awaits you, one that breaks cleanly and is easy to ride. For experienced kitesurfers, our assisted kitesurfing service offers storage, use of the station and someone to keep an eye on you.Book storage
The Kite Centre
The kite centre on the kite beach is new and was built in 2016. From here it’s a mere 100 m to the water’s edge. The kite centre is cosily furnished and ideal for relaxing after a marvellous day of kiting:
- Storage boxes for your personal kite gear
- Sun terraces
- Bar (cold drinks, but yet no food)
If you’re travelling with a non-kiter, they are of course very welcome at the kitesurf centre and can use all facilities free of charge.Book storage

Parties & events
In Santa Maria, there’s something on every evening – and with over 60 clubs, bars and restaurants to choose from, there’s something for everyone. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the high street is closed off to traffic– and the bars and clubs take over. We recommend:
Brasilian: the best caipirinha in town. Unpretentious plastic chairs and tables right on the beach and amazing caipirinhas. Open from 4pm until evening (not all night ). Perfect for a sundowner!
Giramondo: very popular in the evenings, featuring freshly made ice cream, cocktails, great music and a chill atmosphere in the centre of town.
Fishermans: German restaurant with local, freshly caught fish and live football on TV.
Pub Calema: the hottest place to be, with a happy hour nearly every day from 8-10pm....And for more tips, just ask!
- Your passport. This must be valid for at least 6 months after the final day of travel.
- Flip flops, beach sandals
- Sport sunglasses with a strap, preferably polarised
- Sun hat or cap
Things you’ll need but can rent or buy on Sal:
- Waterproof sunscreen, with a high SPF
- UV protection clothing, e.g. a Lycra shirt and board shorts
- Shorty (if you have it; otherwise, this can be hired when you arrive)
Things you can leave at home:
- Your kite pump – we have hand-operated pumps for all popular types of valve.
- Electrical adapter (if you are travelling from Central Europe); otherwise, you will need to bring one along.
The wind comes from the north-east and blows cross-onshore over the KBC kite beach. The trade winds are very reliable, with only a brief lull in mid-summer. From early November to late April, the trade winds ensure truly impressive, outstanding wind statistics. We recommend a shorty, as well as always wearing high-quality, waterproof sunscreen.
Day of arrival
Sal, one of the Cape Verde islands, lies south of the Canaries, 400 kilometres from the coast of Senegal. Sal is easy to reach from all over Europe (e.g. London, Manchester, Birmingham, Amsterdam, Brussels or Lisbon) with TUIfly, Thomson, Thomas Cook or TAP. Flights from Central Europe are around six hours. Certain routes include a brief stopover on the neighbouring island of Boa Vista. The ride from the airport to the hotel takes around 20 minutes.
We’ll be pleased to arrange your transfer from the airport. The driver from the transfer service will wait for you at the Arrivals exit, holding a sign with your name. He’ll safely take you and any gear you may have either to the station or to your hotel – whichever you prefer.
Airport Transfer Day (oneway)
Transfer from the Airport Sal to the hotel on the Island Sal or to the kitesurf centre at daytime.
Airport Transfer Night (oneway)

All you need to do is stop by the centre on your first day and we’ll arrange the pick-up service for the remainder of your stay.
