Wind & Weather
Tarifa is rightly called the "capital of wind." The Strait of Gibraltar accelerates the wind like a jet engine. Throughout the year, approximately 40 percent of the wind is Levante, which comes from the east. Poniente, which blows from the west, also contributes 40 percent of the wind time. On the remaining days, the wind can come from the north or south, combined with high waves. Tarifa offers year-round sunshine and pleasant temperatures. In winter, it doesn't get too cold with maximum daily temperatures of 12°-20°C, and in summer it doesn't get too hot (22°-30°C). From June to September, we recommend a shorty wetsuit, and in the remaining months, a long wetsuit is recommended.
Levante The Levante is a slanting offshore wind from the east, sometimes sideshore. It sometimes blows for just one day, sometimes for several weeks around the clock. The offshore wind flattens the waves and creates a pleasant training area. Its strength varies from fresh to strong. It tends to get stronger in the afternoon, especially at high tide. If the Levante is too strong, we switch to alternative spots. On days with Levante, a rescue boat is available so that we can guarantee safe training even in offshore winds.
Poniente
The Poniente is a diagonal onshore wind from the west. It is strongest in the afternoon when the sky is clear. Especially in winter, this wind can reach storm force. It occurs as a result of low-pressure systems. The Poniente also changes the wave pattern. Small waves then hit the beach.
South
wind The wintery, rainy south wind blows fully onshore and brings high waves with it. It usually blows extremely strongly in the morning and often subsides again from 2 p.m. onwards. Or it comes in intervals, each time before the numerous rain fronts arrive. The rain fronts alternate with sunny spells approximately every half hour. The south wind often floods the beach, creating a huge lagoon. This is a perfect flat water training area that usually lasts for several days.
North wind
With the cold wind from this direction, the tariff bay is somewhat sheltered from the wind. The wind only reaches the mouth of the Rio Jara. In El Palmar and Conil, the north wind creates Australian conditions for surfers.
